There’s no “secular” work for a Christian
It’s easy to think only pastors and missionaries do “real” ministry, while the rest of us just work. Scripture disagrees. Paul says whatever you do — spreadsheet, warehouse, classroom, kitchen — do it all in Jesus’ name. For the Christian, the line between sacred and secular work disappears. Your ordinary job is a place of worship and mission.
God cares about the quality of your work and the way you do it, not just what happens on Sundays.

Ordinary work serves real people
Most jobs, at bottom, meet someone’s genuine need — that’s part of how God provides for the world through everyday people. Your work, done well and honestly, is one of the ways God loves your neighbor. That gives dignity to tasks that feel small or unseen.
Your workplace is your mission field
You spend more waking hours with coworkers than almost anyone. That’s not an accident. The way you work, handle pressure, and treat people is a witness — often the only Bible some of them will read. Ordinary faithfulness in an ordinary job is deeply significant to God.
Try this week
- Do today’s work ‘in the name of the Lord’ — offer it to him.
- Name whose real need your job actually meets.
- Pick one coworker to intentionally encourage this week.
- Ask God to show you the mission where you already are.
Questions to sit with
- Do I see my job as ‘just work’ or as worship and mission?
- Whose needs does my work quietly serve?
- How could my ordinary work point people to God?
Lord, help me see that no honest work is beneath your notice. Let me do my job — ordinary as it feels — for you, serving others and reflecting you right where I am. Amen.
