Build on more than feelings
Feelings are a wonderful start and a terrible foundation — they come and go with sleep, stress, and seasons. A marriage that lasts is built on commitment, shared faith, and daily choices to love. Ecclesiastes gives the picture: a cord of three strands — the two of you plus God — holds when two strands alone would fray.
Keeping God at the center isn’t a nice extra. It’s the third strand that makes the cord strong.
“A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”Ecclesiastes 4:12 (NIV)
Talk about the real stuff first
Before the wedding, talk honestly about the things couples too often avoid: money and debt, kids, faith, in-laws, roles, past wounds, expectations. Surprises after the vows are far harder than hard conversations before them. Consider premarital counseling with a pastor or mentor couple — it’s one of the wisest investments you can make.
Learn to fight fair
Every strong marriage includes conflict; the difference is how you handle it. Aim to attack the problem, not the person. Learn to listen, to say sorry quickly, to forgive fully, and to keep no record of wrongs. How you resolve conflict matters more than whether you have it.
Try this week
- Have honest talks about money, faith, kids, and expectations before the vows.
- Seek premarital counseling with a pastor or mentor couple.
- Practice apologizing and forgiving quickly now.
- Build shared spiritual habits — pray together before the wedding day.
Questions to sit with
- Is our relationship built on feelings or on commitment and faith?
- What hard conversation are we avoiding?
- How do we handle conflict — and what needs to grow?
Lord, be the third strand in this relationship. Help us build on more than feelings — on you, on commitment, on honest love. Prepare us for the real work and joy of marriage. Amen.
