Settle
Put devices aside and invite everyone to take one slow breath.
Ten minutes, one passage, one simple truth, and one meaningful conversation: begin a family habit of noticing and thanking God for His goodness.
Your ten-minute plan
One person can lead, or family members can take turns reading each part.
Put devices aside and invite everyone to take one slow breath.
Read 1 Thessalonians 5:18 aloud once or twice.
Share tonight’s big idea about gratitude and God’s goodness.
Choose one or two questions and let everyone answer.
Each person names one gift, then close with the family prayer.
Read together
“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
Scripture quotation from the English Standard Version.
One big idea
Some days make gratitude easy. A prayer is answered, something exciting happens, or dinner includes a favorite meal. Other days feel tiring, disappointing, or hard. Paul does not say that every circumstance is good. He teaches believers to give thanks in every circumstance because God is still present, faithful, and at work.
Gratitude turns our attention toward gifts we may otherwise overlook: food to eat, people who care for us, laughter, forgiveness, strength for today, and the love of Jesus. As a family, you can train your hearts to notice these gifts and thank the Giver together.
Talk about it
Choose the questions that fit your family. Give younger children time to think, and let every answer be heard without correction or comparison.
What is one good thing that happened today, even if it seemed small?
Why can it be difficult to feel thankful when something has gone wrong?
How does remembering God’s goodness change the way we see a hard day?
Who has God used to care for or encourage you recently?
Tonight’s family habit
Go around the table and let each person finish this sentence: “God, thank You for…”
Each person shares one specific thing from today.
Listen for gifts from God that other family members saw.
Make this a regular closing moment at family meals.
Pray together
Father, thank You for caring for our family and for every good gift You have given us. Forgive us for the times we focus only on what is missing, difficult, or disappointing. Open our eyes to Your goodness in both joyful and challenging moments. Teach us to encourage one another, to be content, and to remember that Your love never changes. Most of all, thank You for Jesus and for the hope we have in Him. In Jesus’ name, amen.
