Settle
Dim the room, get comfortable, and take one slow breath together.
A gentle five-minute reading and prayer for younger children: meet the Shepherd who knows every one of His sheep by name and never loses one.
Your five-minute bedtime plan
Read slowly, keep voices soft, and let your child stay tucked in while you share.
Dim the room, get comfortable, and take one slow breath together.
Read Psalm 23:1 slowly, then say it together one more time.
Remind your child that Jesus cares for His sheep and stays close to them.
Let your child name one place where they need Jesus’ care, comfort, or help.
Rest in the Shepherd’s care and end with a peaceful blessing.
Read together
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
Scripture quotation from the English Standard Version.
One big idea
Sheep need someone to lead them, protect them, and help them find what they need. Psalm 23:1 tells us that the Lord is our Shepherd. That means we are not left alone to find our own way. God watches over us, stays near us, and lovingly provides for us.
Jesus later calls Himself the Good Shepherd. He knows each of His sheep by name and cares about every detail of their lives. When a child lies down to sleep, they can rest knowing they are seen, loved, and held by the Shepherd who never stops caring.
Whisper and wonder
Choose one or two. Keep the conversation simple, warm, and reassuring.
What do you think a shepherd does to take care of sheep?
What does Psalm 23:1 tell us about God?
How does it make you feel to know that Jesus knows His sheep by name?
What is one way the Good Shepherd takes care of you?
Tonight’s calming practice
Place a hand over your heart and say together: “Jesus is my Shepherd. He knows me and cares for me.”
Take a slow breath and think: “My Shepherd is near.”
Slowly let the breath go and think: “He will care for me.”
Repeat three times, then let your body become quiet in His care.
Pray together
Dear Jesus, thank You for being my Good Shepherd. Thank You for knowing me, loving me, and staying close to me. Please watch over me tonight, give me peaceful rest, and help me remember that I am safe in Your care. Lead me, provide for me, and keep everyone I love close to You. Thank You that You never lose one of Your sheep. In Jesus’ name, amen.
