If you're single — whether you love it, hate it, or feel all of that in one afternoon — you've probably felt the quiet message that your life is on hold until it changes. Scripture tells a very different story.
Singleness is not second-class
The two most influential people in the New Testament — Jesus and the apostle Paul — were both single. Jesus lived the fullest human life ever lived, unmarried. Paul went so far as to call singleness a gift with real advantages, especially the freedom to serve God with fewer divided loyalties.
He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord.
1 Corinthians 7:32
Marriage is good. Singleness is also good. Neither is a holding pattern for the other; both are full, God-honoring ways to live.
The real battle is contentment
The struggle usually isn't singleness itself — it's the ache of wanting something you don't have, on a timeline you don't control. That ache is worth naming honestly. And here's the freeing part: contentment, in the Bible, is learned, not gifted to the lucky.
I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.
Philippians 4:11
Paul learned that. Which means contentment isn't a personality type you either have or don't — it's something God grows in you, wherever you are.
Living it well
- Refuse the "on hold" lie. This season is not a rehearsal. It's your actual life, full of things to give and receive now.
- Build deep friendships. God designed community, not just marriage, to meet our need for love and belonging. Invest in it richly.
- Use the freedom. Serve, travel, study, mentor, go where God sends. You have flexibility that other seasons don't.
- Bring the longing to God. If you desire marriage, that's a good desire, not a shameful one. Tell him honestly, and keep trusting his timing and goodness.
- Anchor your identity in Christ. You are not half a person waiting to be completed. In Christ you are already whole, already loved, already home.
Whatever your relationship status, your deepest identity isn't "single" or "married." It's beloved of God — and no season can add to that or take it away.
Lord, help me live this season fully instead of putting my life on hold. Teach me contentment that rests in you. Where I long for more, I trust you with it. Thank you that in Christ I am already whole and already loved. Amen.
