What Is Tithing?

Money can feel like an awkward topic at church, and giving even more so. Let's talk about it plainly — where tithing comes from, what it means, and the heart behind it, with no pressure and no guilt.

What "tithe" means

The word tithe simply means "a tenth." In the Old Testament, God's people were instructed to give back the first tenth of what they received as an act of worship and trust — an acknowledgment that everything they had came from God in the first place.

Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts.

Malachi 3:10

The heart behind the number

Here's the key: giving was never mainly about a percentage. It was about the heart. The tenth was a tangible way of saying, "God, I trust you, and I put you first — even with my money." The New Testament shifts the emphasis from a rule to a posture:

Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

Notice what God loves — not the amount, but the cheerful, willing heart behind it. Giving is meant to be a joy, not a tax.

Why give at all?

• It's an act of worship and trust. Giving loosens money's grip on us and puts God first in a place we're all tempted to guard.
• It supports real work. Your giving funds the ministry of a local church, cares for people in need, and carries the good news further than you could alone.
• It reflects God's own generosity. He gave us everything, most of all his Son. Generosity is how we start to look like him.

Common questions

• Do I have to give exactly 10%? Many Christians use the tithe as a helpful starting point, but the New Testament emphasizes generous, cheerful, intentional giving over a strict figure. Give thoughtfully and willingly.
• What if money is really tight? God sees the widow's small gift as greater than the rich man's large one (Mark 12:41–44). Give what you can, honestly, and trust him with the rest. Generosity is measured by the heart, not the size.
• Where should I give? Typically your local church first, and beyond that, ministries and needs God puts on your heart.

Giving isn't God trying to get something from you. It's an invitation into the deep joy of an open-handed life — the kind of life the most generous Giver in the universe designed you for.
